Member lines hike freight rates on East-bound trade

Our Bureau

Kolkata , Oct. 3

THE member lines of the India /Pakistan /Bangladesh/ Ceylon / UK/Continent Conference have hiked East-bound freight rates by $150 per TEU (twenty-foot equivalent unit) and $250 per FEU (forty-foot equivalent unit) as part of rate restoration initiative of the business plan for the current year.

With this, the shipments from Europe to India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka become costlier. The freight increase, which became effective from October 1, is to remain in force till February 28, 2006, according to informed sources.

The conference members justify the freight hike by citing cost increases caused not only by the rise in charter rates but also delays and congestion in various ports, the sources added.
