Bay `low' causes rains to spill over into Oct

Vinson Kurian

Thiruvananthapuram , Oct. 2

ORIGINATING as it did towards the fag-end of the official monsoon season, the prevailing low-pressure area in the Bay of Bengal has caused ensuing rain to spill over into the month of October but mainly concentrated to the country's east and northeast.

According to the National Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasting (NCMRWF), fairly widespread rains with isolated heavy rainfall have occurred over the Northeastern States, West Bengal, Sikkim and coastal Orissa during the last 24 hours ending Sunday morning.

Forecasts made at the time of genesis of the system had indicated that it is unlikely to cross into land and will dissipate over the sea. Sunday's forecast of likely movement of the system is consistent with this observation.

On Saturday, the monsoon had withdrawn from Uttaranchal and west Uttar Pradesh, some parts of east Uttar Pradesh and east Madhya Pradesh and some more parts of west Madhya Pradesh.

The withdrawal line passed through Bahraich, Allahabad, Satna, Bhopal, Ratlam, Ahmedabad and Dwarka. Scattered rainfall had been reported from the Northeastern States, West Bengal and Sikkim, north Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Konkan, Goa and Madhya Maharashtra. Isolated pockets of north Tamil Nadu and adjoining south interior Karnataka and Gujarat also received light to moderate rainfall.

With the withdrawal of monsoon from northwest India and parts of central and west India, these regions may witness mainly dry weather conditions for the next 4-5 days.

The major rain activity is expected to be confined to the Northeastern States, West Bengal, Sikkim, Orissa and parts of north Coastal Andhra Pradesh.

Due to presence of an upper air cyclonic circulation over Saurashtra and adjoining east Arabian Sea, light to moderate rainfall activity is likely over Gujarat and north Konkan areas.
