New Delhi , Oct. 2

THE domestic branded basmati rice market is growing by 8-10 per cent every year, according to a research report.

Valuing the domestic basmati market at $100 million, the report pegs the overall basmati rice market's average growth rate at six per cent.

Branded players control 25 per cent of the domestic market and the rest is in the realm of the unorganised sector, said Four-S Services Research in its report.

Domestic consumption of basmati has been steadily increasing due to changing preferences, increasing affluence and high per capita income.

According to the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), the share of basmati consumption to total rice consumption has increased from 0.6 per cent in fiscal 2000-01 to 1.4 per cent in fiscal 2003-04.

Meanwhile on the export front, India's exports of basmati rice were 1.13 million tonnes in 2004-05 as against 0.77 million tonnes the previous year. According to estimates, in value terms, the exports rose to Rs 2,742 crore in 2004-05 from Rs 1,990 crore in 2003-04.

Approximately 10 lakh hectares of land are dedicated to basmati in India, with an average productivity of around 1.4 - 2.1 tonnes a hectare. Traditional basmati is grown only in the States of Haryana, Punjab and some parts of Uttar Pradesh and Uttaranchal, said the report. Haryana accounts for around 60 per cent of the area under basmati rice in India, followed by Uttar Pradesh with 10 per cent and Punjab with 30 per cent.
