Rural Development Call to strengthen women SHGs in Karnataka to check alcoholism Our Bureau
Mangalore , Oct. 2 THE Union Minister of State for Planning, Mr M.V. Rajashekaran, has said that strengthening of women self-help group (SHG) movement will help eradicating the problems arising out of alcohol consumption in society. Inaugurating a convention of alcoholic de-addicts in Mangalore on Sunday, he said that women play a prominent role in the welfare of society. He said that the SHGs formed by Sri Kshetra Dharmasthala Rural Development Project (SKDRDP) have taken a lead in creating an alcohol-free society in some parts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts. Addiction to liquor and drugs is bringing down moral values in society, he said. Stressing the need for giving importance to humanity while developing science, he said, "Development of science without humanity will lead to destruction." The convention was jointly organised by SKDRDP and Janajagruti Vedike. Speaking on the occasion, Ms Manorama Madhwaraj, Udupi MP, criticised the policies of the State Government in sanctioning more licences for opening arrack shops in Karnataka. The Government is only looking at the revenues from this sector. It should also look at the lives of people affected by liquor, she said. The President of SKDRDP, Dr D. Veerendra Heggade, said that SKDRDP conducted the first alcohol de-addiction campaign in 1995. He said that 11,684 people in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi district have given up alcohol consumption till now. In a memorandum submitted to the Minister, the Janajagruti Vedike urged the Government not to allot any more licences for arrack shops in the region. The Government should take strict action against the un-licensed arrack shops, it said. Nearly 50,000 people from various parts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts took part in the convention.
