Banking on agriculture

This refers to the editorial `The lending conundrum' (Business Line, September 30). We have no dearth of planners and intellectuals, specialists in farming.

Yet we are not able to find a permanent way to relieve our farmers from the snare of debt. This is also in spite of agriculture being India's mainstay. Our banking system needs thorough restructuring to give due importance to lending in the agricultural sector.

Unfortunately, bank staff are more concerned with completing their balance sheets in time. Most banks in India lack trained personnel and rural banks are not even provided with adequate staff.

The banking system requires committed staff in the management as well as in the field level. Unless this radical change is made, it will be difficult to achieve the government's goal in agriculture and rural development.
