Hatsun Agro bullish on dairy ingredient exports

Dairy ingredients, primarily milk powder, are being exported to West Asia, South-East Asia and Canada. Hatsun expects to consolidate its export position in the current year.

Chennai , Sept. 30

HATSUN Agro Product Ltd expects dairy ingredient exports to contribute a significant share of its revenues during the current year.

Exports will be up from about one per cent of its Rs 450-crore turnover in 2004-05 to about 25 per cent of its turnover this fiscal. The company is expanding its production facilities to cater to this business area.

Dairy ingredients, primarily milk powder, are being exported to West Asia, South-East Asia and Canada. Hatsun expects to consolidate its export position in the current year.

Hatsun, among the largest private dairy companies, handles about 12 lakh litres milk a day. It also manufactures and markets premium ice creams under the `Arun' brand name.

Addressing the annual general meeting here on Thursday, the Chairman and Managing Director, Mr R.G. Chandramogan, said the company was setting up additional milk powder production capacities at Kanchipuram, where it has a 10-tonne-a-day plant. The company is adding another 20 tonnes to its daily capacity, which would be available from December. It also has a 25-tonne-a-day-plant in Salem.

Exports of dairy ingredients and ice creams will be the major focus of business in the current year. For instance, in the first quarter, exports touched Rs 28 crore against Rs 6.8 crore for the whole of 2004-05. Hatsun Agro has entered into an agreement in Seychelles to market Arun Ice-Cream and it also exports ice creams to Brunei.

He said the benefits of the company's entry into the export markets and the capacity expansion of the powder plant would be reaped this year.

Last year, despite a 25 per cent increase in turnover over 2003-04, its profitability had taken a beating because of additional costs, including interest costs to fund expansion, and the entry-level pricing of its products in the export market.

In the first five months this fiscal, the company recorded a turnover of Rs 220 crore. Hatsun Agro Product Ltd markets milk under the brand names Arokya and Komatha in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Kerala. It also markets value-added products such as skimmed and whole milk powder, dairy whitener, butter, ghee and butter oil in the domestic and export markets.
