BHPV unions to join strike

ALL unions in the Bharat Heavy Plate and Vessels Ltd (BHPV) here are supporting the strike call given by the Leftist unions — the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) and the All-India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) — in protest against privatisation and disinvestment.
Mr S. Jyotiswara Rao, General Secretary of the BHPV Employees' Union affiliated to the CITU, said that all the 1,200 workers belonging to different unions, including the one affiliated to the Indian National Trade Union Congress (INTUC), had decided to stay away from work on Thursday. It may be noted that the ailing public sector unit has been awaiting a revival package for quite some time and the UPA Government is yet to clear it. Though it has orders worth Rs 250-300 crore on hand, it is unable to execute them on time for want of working capital. It is estimated that the unit has incurred a loss of Rs 70 crore during the year, 2004-2005, pushing it deeper into a crisis. The loss, however, is yet to be officially announced.
In the backdrop, all the unions in the unit have decided to support the strike call.
