Conference on mining industry begins in Goa

Panaji , Sept 28

THE Union Minister for Mines, Mr Sis Ram Ola, will soon convene a meeting of the Mining Ministers of the States to resolve the grievance about the procedural delays in regard to clearing of mining leases and the issue of environmental clearances for mining.

Mr Ola, who inaugurated a two-day international conference on mining industry on Wednesday in South Goa, was responding to the issues regarding delays in mining clearances raised by the Goa Chief Minister, Mr Pratapsingh Rane, and the Mining Minister, Mr Digambar Kamat.

"The Ministry of Mines has already appointed a working group to formulate the strategy for exploration, exploitation, and development of mining," Mr Ola said.

He added that the Government was also planning to step up the pace of liberalisation to make it conducive to develop the mining industry further and to ensure that it can be competitive in the current global economy.

The Minister said that everybody should join hands to make concerted efforts to augment current production capacities of mines by addressing urgent issues such as higher productivity through technology upgradation, conservation, creation of suitable infrastructure, and further exploration in known and unknown areas.
