`Villagers must be involved in planning development'

Our Bureau

Mangalore , Sept. 25

PARTICIPATION of villagers in the planning process of the developmental needs is necessary for the overall development of villages, according to Mr Hariprakash Shetty, General Manager of Vijaya Bank.

Presiding over the 14th annual general meeting of the Vijaya Rural Development Foundation (VRDF) in Mangalore on Sunday, he said that VRDF has taken a lead in this regard. It has promoted village development councils (VDCs) in 17 villages of Dakshina Kannada district. Stating that representatives from weaker sections of society, women and artisans are members of these VDCs, he said they are involved in the planning, implementation and developmental activities of the villages.

He said that VRDF should extend VDCs to more number of villages in a phased manner.

Highlighting the role of self-help groups (SHGs) in rural development, Mr Shetty said that financing of SHGs is gaining importance and popularity. SHGs, which are emerging as an alternative and effective micro-credit system, reduce high costs and ensure a near-100 per cent recovery. VRDF should take steps to ensure credit-linkage of SHGs in a big way.

The meeting was informed that the VRDF would extend its operations in Dharwar, Mandya and Mysore districts.

Mr Monappa Karkera, who has been awarded the `Krishi Panditha' reward by the Karnataka Government, was honoured on the occasion.
