Cabinet nod for Regional Centre for Biotechnology Training

THE Union Cabinet on Thursday gave its approval for the establishment of a Regional Centre for Biotechnology Training and Education under the auspices of UNESCO, at an estimated cost of Rs 30.95 crore.

The functions of the Regional Centre sponsored by the Department of Biotechnology, include executing educational and training activities to transfer knowledge in biotechnology, and also undertake research, development and scientific investigations in collaboration with relevant research centres in the region amongst others, the Information and Broadcasting Minister, Mr S. Jaipal Reddy, told presspersons here.

The centre would act as a focal point for co-operation among member States of the Asian Region in Biotechnology. Earlier, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs had approved acquisition of an Oceanographic Research Vessel at an estimated cost of Rs 189.63 crore for carrying out research in the Indian waters.
