The Hindu Business Line : `Asia to account for more than 50 pc of Freescale revenues'

IN the next three years, Freescale Semiconductor's proceeds from Asian countries will account for more than half its total revenue, according to Mr Ishrat Hakim, Vice-President (Asia Sales), Freescale Semiconductor, Hong Kong.

Speaking to Business Line on Thursday, he said: "We expect the revenue from Asia to be more than 50 per cent."

Currently, sales to Asia bring in almost $2.54 billion to Freescale, translating into 44 per cent of its revenue.

Speaking about the importance of India globally, he said that products were now being "aimed" at India.

At the Freescale Tech Forum on Wednesday, Mr Franz J. Fink, Senior Vice-President and General Manager, Wireless & Mobile Systems Group, Freescale, had credited the Indian design team for developing a new architecture for handsets - the Mobile Extreme Convergence (MXC).

"With the MXC, the number as well as cost of components in handset designs can be reduced," he added.

The Indian team is currently working on 90 and 65 nanometre chip manufacturing processes for wireless and networking products.

Another new technology for improving the life of a product - Smart Speed technology - is also being developed by this team. This technology is expected to allow MP3 players to play for 60 hours. "India will be the second largest design centre. There is a lot of presence here in building of software," said Mr Hakim. The company has doubled the headcount to 500 this year and has offices in Noida and Bangalore.
