Mergers & Acquisitions Matrix Labs acquires 43% stake in Swiss co Explora Our Bureau
Hyderabad , Sept. 20 MATRIX Laboratories Ltd (MLL), the Hyderabad-based pharma major, has acquired 43 per cent holding in Explora Laboratories S.A, based in Mendrisio, Switzerland. Explora Laboratories is engaged in the research and development of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) through different processes. In a press release here on Tuesday, Matrix said Explora's expertise in the area of bio-catalysis would be helpful in the development of corticosteroid and other high potency APIs. The Swiss R&D major also has expertise in the development of specialised and modified release dosage forms. Managed by a team of scientists, Explora also possesses know-how in the chemistry of nucleic acids (DNA & RNA derivatives) that are mainly used in the development of anti-viral and anti-cancer drugs. The Swiss major has already filed two patents to cover its inventions in enzymes immobilisation, which is critical for the development of processes involving enzymatic reactions, the release said. Matrix has a large portfolio of products in the therapeutic segments of central nervous system (CNS), cardiovascular, anti-bacterial, anti-viral, anti-retroviral, anti-asthma, anti-histamine, anti-fungal, proton pump inhibitors and pain management. Matrix expects that access to Explora's scientific team will accelerate its entry into high potential growth and niche areas such as corticosteroid and anti-cancer segments. In addition to development of niche generic APIs, Explora's technology platforms will also provide an opportunity to Matrix in the area of contract research and manufacturing for multinational branded pharmaceutical companies. At present, Explora is pursuing third party research work for a group of generic and branded pharmaceutical companies, including Matrix Labs. Explora expects to record revenues of 2 million Swiss francs for the calendar year 2005.
