Water Alisagar scheme gets eco-clearance Our Bureau
Hyderabad , Sept. 15 THE Rs 108-crore Alisagar Lift Irrigation Scheme of the Andhra Pradesh Government has obtained environmental clearance from the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF). The project to lift water from Godavari river, during high flood period (July to October), is aimed at providing irrigation to nearly 54,000 acres, said to an official press release. The farmers in the water-starved region at the tail end of the Nizamsagar project in the district of Nizamabad are expected to be the beneficiaries. An Expert Committee for River Valley and Hydroelectric projects at its meeting held on June 15 considered the proposal sent by the State Government for project clearance, according to Dr S. Bhowmik, a senior official in the MoEF. Neither forestland nor any national park/reserve or archaeological site or even a forest situated within seven km radius of the project site is involved in the project. Similarly, no person would be displaced by the project. The public hearing for the project was also held on March 30, 2005, Dr Bhowmik said in a letter quoted by the press release.
