`Onam week' from today

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The `Onam week' celebrations organised by Kerala Tourism will begin in the city on Monday. The Kerala Chief Minister, Mr Oommen Chandy, will inaugurate the celebrations on Monday evening at a function to be held in the city's Nishagandhi theatre.

Announcing this at a press conference in the city on Saturday, the Kerala Tourism Minister, Mr K.C. Venugopal, said that the `Onam week' celebrations will conclude on September 17. This year, `Onam week' celebrations will also be held in Kochi and Kozhikode.

District Tourism Promotion Councils will organise similar celebrations in the various district headquarters, he added.

The highlights of the celebrations in Thiruvananthapuram include music programmes, dance performances and exhibitions. A magic show and a sound a light show are other highlights of the celebrations.

In Kochi, the `Onam week' celebrations will begin on Tuesday and will include cultural programmes and a food festival. Similarly, the festivities in Kozhikode will include music performances and other cultural programmes, he said.
