Anti-dumping Agri-Biz & Commodities - Aquaculture `AP shrimp farmers badly hit by US anti-dumping duty' Our Bureau
Visakhapatnam , Aug 31 THE State Government wants the US to revoke the anti-dumping duty on shrimp imports into that county and is hopeful of a positive outcome, especially after the recent visit of the US team to Nellore to assess the tsunami damage to the fisheries sector, Dr S. Chellappa, State Principal Secretary, Fisheries said. He was speaking here at a function organised by the local branch of the Central Institute of Fisheries Technology on Wednesday to mark the release of a book - Sustainable fisheries development: Focus on Andhra Pradesh. Dr Chellappa said that the State, a leading exporter of cultured shrimp, would make every effort to get the duty revoked. "I have requested the Chief Minister to write to the Prime Minister on the issue and do everything possible to help the shrimp exporters and farmers," he said. Right now, he said, the position was very bad and the shrimp farmers were not even getting Rs 180 a kg. "At one time, a kg of shrimp used to fetch Rs 550-600 a kg," he said. He urged the scientists to conduct intensive research into white spot diseases and other viral and bacterial diseases afflicting the shrimp in order to help the farmers. Dr K. Devadasan, the Director of the Central Institute of Fisheries Technology, Kochi, said Andhra Pradesh stood first in coastal aquaculture, second in inland fish production, third in total fish production and fifth in marine fish production. "In view of the importance of the State, we conducted a seminar here on sustainable fisheries with special reference to the State and brought out the book to help all involved in the sector," he said. He expressed the hope that the fisheries sector in the State had the resilience to withstand the recent setbacks and emerge stronger. "I am sure the State will be the leader in the times to come too," he said. Dr Sibsankar Gupta, the scientist-in-charge, the local centre of the CIFT, Dr P.K. Vijayan, the secretary of the Society of Fisheries Technologists (India), Dr P.T Mathew, another expert, spoke.
