, THE West Bengal Government is now planning to carve out a portion of the recently inaugurated Calcutta Leather Complex for an IT park. The complex is located on the eastern fringes of the city.

If everything goes according to plan, the Government will take 130 acres out of the 1100-acre campus created specifically for leather industry to set up the third earmarked zone for IT industry.

It has already initiated work to set up a park in the Rajarhat area on the north eastern fringes of the city following the IT zone in Saltlake City.

Talking to Business Line, the State Commerce and Industry Minister, Mr. Nirupam Sen, said that the Leather Complex had some excess land and discussions were on with the BOT partner M L Dalmiya & Co to use it to accommodate the increasing demand from the IT sector. The deal, however, is yet to be finalised.

Apart from the proposed software park, the State Government and Indian Leather Products Association have already decided to set up a leather goods park including a multi-level training centre and design studio inside the Calcutta Leather Complex. The Centre has also agreed to create a special economic zone in the complex.
