Who filed GI for basmati at Chennai office?

Our Bureau

New Delhi, Aug. 29

Even as there is a sense of urgency to have the exact geographical indication (GI) defined for basmati, an application has been moved in the GI office Chennai for basmati.

Neither the scientific community nor the Commerce Ministry officials seem to know who has moved the application.

"An application has been filed in the Chennai-based GI office for defining geographical area of production of basmati and Kerala's navara rice variety by somebody," said Dr Bala Ravi from MSSRF.

Nobody knows who has filed the application since according to protocol, the details of applicant as well as the area defined have not yet been divulged.

The Agricultural and Processed Foods Products Export Development Authority (Apeda) has been mandated to define the GI for basmati internationally. However, it is yet to be mandated to obtain the GI for basmati domestically.

When asked about the application, the Apeda Chairman, Mr K.S. Money, said: "Apeda hasn't yet moved any application... As and when the application is published for seeking comments, we would certainly object to it, provided we are mandated to the job domestically."

He said India was in talks with Pakistan to move a joint GI application for basmati internationally.
