EVEN as the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) welcomed the introduction of the Food Safety and Standards Bill 2005 in the Lok Sabha, it has expressed concern over laws relating to food standards.
The chamber has asked the Government to ensure an equal representation of all stakeholders in the composition of the Central Advisory Committee.
It has said that samples of food, analysed by a food analyst, must also be analysed by a Referral Accredited Laboratory recognised by a food authority. The chamber has pointed out that since the food industry is dynamic in nature, with new products coming into the market in response to changing consumer needs, the regulations covering food products should be separate from the Act itself that has general principles.
While there has been much investment in the food processing industry, the absence of a single law or a single authority has been considered a major hindrance, especially for small and medium companies in the sector.
