Events Congress to hold arecanut growers' meet in DK Our Bureau
Mangalore , Aug. 28 THE Congress party will hold arecanut growers' meetings in various taluks of Dakshina Kannada district from August 29. Apart from discussing growers' problems, these meetings will seek the help of State and Central governments to tackle them. A press release by Mr Ivan D'Souza, Vice-President of the Dakshina Kannada District Congress Committee, said here on Saturday that the party would hold such meetings in Puttur and Gurupur on Monday, Sullia on September 2, and Belthangady and Bantwal on September 3. He said the party would urge the State and Central governments to constitute an `arecanut board' to tackle the problems of growers. Priority should be given to research on value-added arecanut products, he said. He urged the Central Government to impose a ban on the import of arecanut. The consignments that have already been imported should be made to undergo thorough quality analysis tests, he added. The Central Government, which came out with a special package for coffee growers, should implement such a package for arecanut growers also, he said. Mr D'Souza, who is the Government-nominated Director of Central Arecanut and Cocoa Marketing and Processing Cooperative (Campco) Ltd, wanted the State Government to extend the minimum support price scheme for arecanut from December to March. He also suggested the State Government disburse compensation to the growers affected by heavy rainfall. The farmers' meetings would discuss all the above issues in detail, he said, adding that a memorandum will be submitted to the State and Central governments based on the outcome of these meetings.
