PHDCCI seeks independent authority for Delhi airport

Our Bureau

New Delhi , Aug. 25

PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry has urged the Ministry of Civil Aviation to set up an autonomous body to monitor ground and cargo services at Delhi airport. The chamber said that Delhi Airport should be developed as a hub for northern India, especially since the region is landlocked. This calls for greater facilities for cargo operations, which would be efficiently managed by an autonomous body.

The chamber further stated that airport charges should be substantially reduced to levels comparable with neighbouring South-East Asian and Gulf countries. Steep landing fees and navigational charges at Delhi airport were driving away foreign airlines, the chamber said.

Supporting the Naresh Chandra Committee Report's suggestion to categorise air turbine fuel (ATF) as "declared goods" under the Central Sales Tax Act to limit sales tax on ATF to four per cent, the chamber said that the Government should bring parity in AFT taxes for jets and turboprop aircraft.
