A scene from Palakkad. The acreage under paddy cultivation is fast declining with land being used for building and other purposes. The area under rice cultivation came down from 5.6 lakh hectares in 1990-91 to 3.1 lakh hectares in 2002-03, and the produce from 10.9 lakh tonnes to 7 lakh tonnes now.
