Visakhapatnam , Aug. 24

BRANDIX Lanka, which signed a memorandum of understanding with the State Government in July for establishing a garment unit in the proposed special economic zone at Atchyuthapuram in Visakhapatnam district, is planning to start civil works next month, according to sources.

In accordance with the agreement, the company has been allotted 1,000 acres in the SEZ. A special purpose vehicle is to be set up for setting up the garment unit.

According to the sources, the civil works are likely to be completed in three to four months and the unit will start functioning. If all plans go according to schedule, the unit may become fully operational in three to four years.

Meanwhile, the district administration is gearing up to cater to the huge need for skilled personnel, especially women, needed for garment manufacture. According to Mr K. Kannababu, Project Director of the District Rural Development Agency, the company may need 65,000 non-technical skilled workers in the next three to five years.

The district administration is spending Rs 12.16 crore for the purpose. The women are being given training on high-speed juki machines.

The DRDA is planning a small unit in each of the constituencies. In the Visakhapatnam municipal corporation, 10,000 women are being trained.

"Apart from the Brandix company, an apparel park is also coming up in the vicinity of Gajuwaka. A common facility centre is proposed there with 100 juki machines. Some of these women may also get employment in the units there," he has said.
