NEC plans to set up `solution company'

Moumita Bakshi Chatterjee

New Delhi , Aug 24

IT company NEC is considering setting up a subsidiary in India to customise and market the company's existing security applications in the local marketplace.

"Our core competence relates to IT security solutions with bio-metrics technology. We see a tremendous opportunity in India for personnel recognition system from an IT security point of view. We have some existing solutions but it cannot be directly deployed in the Indian market and needs some modification. We will ask our Indian staff to modify the existing solutions for the India market," Mr Yagi Tomohiro, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of NEC Solutions Asia Pacific, said on the sidelines of the first meeting of India-Japan ICT Ministerial Forum here.

According to company officials, the subsidiary would look at customisation and ready deployment of the company's flagship Homeland Security Solution, that includes national ID systems, automatic border control solution and e-passport system.

"We may later ask the Indian staff to deliver their expertise not only for the domestic market but also for other ASEAN countries," he added.

He said the proposed solution company in India would initially have 50 people and entail functions such as consulting, customisation and research and development, and sales.

Within ASEAN, NEC has solution companies in Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia and the Philippines, he pointed out.

"Solution is a local business because of differences in culture, language and regulation, and although we may have a existing solutions package, it may not apply fully to a local market. Customisation of the application comes into place due to factors like size and scalability. For instance, a product in Singapore supports limited population but the same product in India may need more scalability," Mr Tomohiro said.
