Paddy production target will be met: Pawar

New Delhi , Aug 19

THE Union Government is hopeful of achieving 79 million tonne (mt) paddy production target for kharif despite late sowing and excessive rainfall in six major States, the Agriculture and Food Minister, Mr Sharad Pawar said.

The smooth sowing process of paddy in last ten days has given rise to the expectation of meeting up the initial shortfall in sowing, Mr Pawar said, addressing the one-day conference of State Food Secretaries.

He said the Centre was trying its best to fulfil the ever-rising demands of rice in the country. Mr Pawar, however, urged the States to set up effective procurement machinery to safeguard the farmers' interests, according to an official statement. He expressed confidence in achieving the procurement targets for coarse grains too.
