AP Govt reimposes ban on naxal outfits

Hyderabad , Aug 17

THE Andhra Pradesh Government today announced its decision to reimpose the ban on CPI (Maoist) and related frontal organisations.

The Government had allowed the ban to lapse last year to pave the way for parleys with them.

The State Home Minister, Mr Jana Reddy, told newspersons that the Government decided to ban Maoists, Radical Students Union, All India Radical Students Federation, Singareni Karmika Samakhya, Radical Youth League, Rythu Coolie Sangham, Viplava Karmika Sangham, and Virasam members who represent revolutionary writers' association.

The decision to reimpose ban, after about a year, comes after the gunning down of senior Congress MLA and freedom fighter, Mr C. Narsi Reddy, his son and eight others by four naxals on Independence Day.

Though the Cabinet meeting discussed the issue on Tuesday, the Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajashekhara Reddy, was authorised to take an appropriate decision in this regard.

Earlier in the day, the Chief Minister held discussions with the Union Home Minister, Mr Shivraj Patil, and urged him to impose a similar ban across the other affected States.

With the Centre communicating its decision to support the State Government in curbing the extremist menace, the Chief Minister met senior officials today and decided to reimpose the ban.

Reacting to the development, former Chief Minister and TDP President, Mr N. Chandrababu Naidu, questioned the decision of the State Government to hold talks with them and urged it to explain what it had achieved by allowing the ban to lapse.
