Visakhapatnam , Aug. 15

THE Visakhapatnam port is hopeful of crossing the 60-million-tonne mark this year and it has so far handled 20 million tonnes this fiscal, according to Mr K. Ratna Kishore, Chairman.

He said at the Independence Day celebrations in the port stadium here on Monday that the port had become the first in the country last year (2004-2005) to cross the 50-million-tonne mark. "The Ministry has set the target of 55 million tonnes, but as per the present indications, we may even cross the 60-million-tonne mark. We are quite confident, of course, of surpassing the target," he said.

Exhorting the employees to strive hard for the development of the port, Mr Ratna Kishore said that recently the Shipping Minister, Mr T.R. Baalu, inaugurated the West Quay VII berth in the inner harbour, and the VPT was exploring the possibility of allotting it as a captive berth for alumina export.

He outlined the plan for the upgradation of the outer harbour for handling 2,00,000 DWT vessels. There were also plans to install mechanised facility at the general cargo berth for unloading coking coal.

He thanked the exporters, importers, C&F agents, stevedores, employees and all others who made the port the number one in the country.
