Nabard to launch farmers' clubs in Kerala

Thiruvananthapuram , Aug. 9

THE National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (Nabard) will launch 150 `farmers' clubs' in the State this financial year.

According to Mr B.S. Shekhawat, Chief General Manager-Kerala, Nabard, the bank will spend Rs 24 lakh on this initiative.

Kerala already has 368 farmers' clubs, sponsored by the bank, Mr Shekhawat said in a press release.

Established by Nabard to encourage farmers to work with each other and with other groups to develop appropriate technologies and solutions to the problems of the farming sector, these clubs are informal groups of farmers in an area.

Each club is expected to have a savings bank account and should be sponsored by the local branch of a bank.

While Nabard provides need-based assistance for the formation and maintenance of each club for the first three years, the sponsor banks are expected to support after that.

The clubs are also expected to work towards ensuring financial stability by generating their own resources through various measures.

The clubs are expected to serve as the interface between farmers and specialists in various areas related to agriculture.

They are to liaise with suppliers of agricultural inputs such as fertilisers and seeds.
