TCL India Holdings Pvt Ltd, a 100 per cent subsidiary of TCL Corporation, China, is planning to set up a colour TV manufacturing unit in the country, but has not yet decided on the site, said Mr A. Gopalakrishna, Senior Vice-President (Sales and Marketing).

At a press meet here on Monday, he said the subsidiary had started operations in the country last September and in four months of 2004, it could sell 82,000 colour TV sets. "We have an ambitious target of selling 6 lakh CTVs this year," he said.

He said the company is importing the components from China and getting them assembled at eight units across the country. "We don't want to outsource for an indefinite period. We are holding talks with different States, including AP, for setting up a manufacturing unit."

Claiming that TCL had sold 17.16 million CTVs worldwide in 2004 , he said the target is to touch the 25 million-mark this year. "We are the largest manufacturers and sellers of CTVs. As much as 87 per cent of our turnover comes from CTVs," he said.

He said the company had formed a joint venture with Thomson and strengthened its presence in the market. Currently, it has a 3.7 per cent share in the domestic CTV market and a 6 per cent share in Andhra Pradesh. "We are planning to spend Rs 35 crore on the ad campaign. Besides, we will be opening 50 exclusive TCL showrooms in the country. We have 20 branch offices, 72 franchisees and 4,000 dealers," Mr Gopalakrishna said.

The company is also selling household appliances such as air-conditioners, washing machines and magnetic induction cookers. "During the four months in 2004, we could achieve a turnover of nearly Rs 100 crore. This year (January-December 2005), our aim is to cross the Rs 500-crore mark," he added.
