THE Udupi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (UCCI) welcomed the power purchase agreement (PPA) between the Karnataka Government and Nagarjuna Power Company Ltd.
Under the agreement, the company which plans to set up a 1,015-MW thermal power plant at Padubidri in Udupi district will sell power at Rs 2.17 a unit. The July 29 meeting of the Karnataka Cabinet had given in-principle clearance for the PPA.
The UCCI Secretary, Mr K. Surendra Nayak, said in a press release that many small-scale industries (SSIs) in the district were facing the threat of closure due to non-availability of quality power. The establishment of a thermal power unit in the region would help solve their problems.
Moreover, several information technology (IT) companies plan to set up shop in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts. The power plant would spur economic development in the entire region.
However, he requested the Government to take experts and the local people into confidence while setting up major industries and projects. Environmental concerns should also be addressed, he added.
