Quarantine restrictions

The jubilation over the opening of the Wagah border crossing, a milestone in bi-lateral trade with Pakistan, seems to have ended with the quarantine restrictions imposed on the import of potatoes.

The reason advanced by the Food and Agriculture Ministry of Pakistan that the potatoes could be infected with a virus has found no takers among the importers. Their apprehensions that the restrictions could be aimed at protecting hoarders needs to addressed by the Pakistani authorities.
