Cotton Corporate - Outlook Nuziveedu to roll out Bt version of extra-long staple cotton soon Our Bureau
Coimbatore , July 29 THE Secunderabad-based Nuziveedu Seeds Ltd is gearing up to roll out the Bt version of Extra Long Staple (ELS) cotton. "We are in the process of developing ELS hybrids as also Bt ELS. But it will take at least two years to release the Bt ELS,'' Mr M. Prabhakar Rao, Managing Director, Nuziveedu Seeds, said. He was in the city in connection with the Silver Jubilee Valedictory Function of the South India Cotton Association. Nuziveedu Seeds was among the three companies (the others being Rasi Seeds and Mahyco) honoured by SICA for its contribution to cottonseed production. Talking to newspersons on cottonseed scenario, he said he envisaged a demand-supply gap in ELS cottonseed production due to the rising demand. According to him, more than one lakh packets of these seeds have been sold and the production has been strengthened by 30 per cent compared to the earlier year. "The area under ELS cotton in Dharmapuri belt has taken a beating,'' he said and pointed out that the offtake of the DCH, Varalaxmi and MCH1332 seeds were quite encouraging. "We have only given a limited quantity (of Bt Bunny) this year. But we are planning to increase the supply to 2.5-3 million packets (of 450 gm each) in the coming year,'' he said, adding that the area under the variety was on the rise in Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Gujarat and Tamil Nadu.
