New Vizag berth to be inaugurated today

MR T.R Baalu, Union Minister of Shipping and Road Transport, is scheduled to inaugurate the West Quay (VII) berth on Friday, according to a press release issued by the Visakhapatnam Port Trust.

The Andhra Chief Minister, Dr Y.S Rajasekhara Reddy, will be the chief guest.

The berth was constructed by AFCONS Infrastructure Ltd at a cost of Rs 33 crore. It can accommodate vessels up to 45,000 dwt and 10.06 m draft initially and 11.3 m draft eventually. Construction activity, which began in August, 2002was completed earlier this month. Visakhapatnam port, the first of the major ports in the country to cross the 50-million tonne mark, is making concerted efforts to enhance its capacities in tune with the requirements of the trade, says the press release. The port has two harbours — the inner harbour and the outer one. The inner harbour has 14 multi-commodity berths, two oil berths and one captive berth for fertilisers and fertiliser raw materials. The outer harbour has six berths. The existing capacity is fully utilised, adds the release.

In another release, the Hindusthan Shipyard Ltd here has said Dr Y.S Rajasekhara Reddy, will lay the keel for the construction of the first of 30,000 dwt trader series bulk carriers by the HSL for the Chennai-based Goodearth Maritime Ltd on Friday at 11 a.m.

Dr D.T Joseph, Secretary, Shipping, is also scheduled to attend both the functions along with the Shipping Minister.
