Heavy rains force REL to cut power

Our Bureau

Mumbai , July 26

RELIANCE Energy has cut power supply to several suburban localities in Mumbai citing safety reasons.

The cuts were applied in several suburban pockets ranging from the extended suburbs of Bhayandar and Mira Road which are outside of the Mumbai municipal area; to Bandra, the southern limit beyond which Reliance Energy's distribution area ends.

Certain commercial areas such as Maharasthra Industrial Development Corporation area in Andheri, Saki Naka (where several companies are located), Sahar Road (leading to the international airport), Juhu, and the shopping hangout of Linking Road, had to go without power for hours together.

"Due to heavy rains and intense water logging Reliance Energy had to switch off power supply in some areas of suburban Mumbai to ensure consumer safety," said a statement from the company.

"As soon as the water levels go down, supply will be restored," added a spokesperson for the company. The company has also issued a toll-free helpline number so that consumers can report situations of potential danger.

Reliance Energy's peak load increases after office hours, since it supplies mainly to residential areas. BEST, which supplies electricity to South Mumbai, has larger morning loads with offices and establishments dominating the area.
