Tirupur knitwear cos shut for a day

Our Bureau

Coimbatore , July 26

KNITWEAR manufacturing in Tirupur has come to a halt with almost all the sections engaged in the knitwear production chain having stopped work responding to the one-day bandh called today by the all-political parties and the hosiery workers unions in support of the dyeing and bleaching units entangled in the pollution issue.

The bandh was called to highlight the distress faced by the dyeing and bleaching units in the wake of the Madras High Court order of closure of the dyeing units that failed to deposit their share of funds for implementing the `zero' discharge of trade effluents.

The trade unions which supported the bandh had wanted the Tamil Nadu Government to intervene through financial support in the form of soft loan to the dyers for installing the effluent treatment plant, including the reverse osmosis (RO) plant as advised by the court.

The one-day bandh is being observed even as the Madras High Court is schedule to hear the case relating to the Tirupur dyeing and bleaching units tomorrow.

The division bench of the High Court which has sought to review the case by going into the issue of how many units have come forward to pay the 25 per cent of the cost of the installation of the RO plant has also ordered the State Pollution Control Board to present the status of the Tirupur dyeing units in terms of their production capacity.

Though today's bandh had hit the industrial production in and around Tirupur, normal life in the hosiery town remained unaffected by and large. Most of the buses and eateries functioned as usual and there was no untoward incident reported in the town.

In the meantime, the pollution control board has gone about implementing the court order against the dyeing and bleaching units, by asking the Electricity Department to disconnect the power supply.
