Sites identified for LPG stations in twin cities

Hyderabad , July 26

CONFORMING to a Supreme Court directive on curbing pollution in the twin cities, the State Government has identified 35 spots for opening LPG filling stations.

While oil companies take care of investments, the Civil Supplies Department would provide managerial assistance to run these filling stations.

Announcing this at a conference here on Tuesday, Mr Bhanwarlal, Commissioner of Civil Supplies Department, said the department was formulating a scheme in this regard.

The move would not only reduce pollution but also increase fuel efficiency.

Mr N. Raghuveera Reddy, Minister for Agriculture, who recently got the civil supplies portfolio, said the Government was keen to introduce latest metrology machinery to check adulteration of petrol and diesel.

"There are instruments which can give results in just three minutes," he said.

In the present practice, labs gave results six months after the collection of samples. "If we get results instantaneously, we can penalise the guilty," Mr Reddy said. He asked the department to study the issue and present a report.

With regard to supply of rice, he said the Government would take up with the Centre the issue of procurement of more rice from Chhattisgarh, in case of shortage. "Rice from Chhattisgarh suits our requirement," he added.

On issuing ration cards, Mr Reddy said the process the Government had initiated was not aimed at weeding.

"It is only to ensure all the eligible get the cards, while keeping at bay some unscrupulous dealers and other elements from having more cards," he said.

With an eye on the upcoming municipal elections, the Government had decided to complete the process in urban local bodies. "We will later take up the process in rural areas," he added.
