Kaya Clinic on expansion spree

KAYA Skin Clinic, a venture from Marico Industries, the makers of Parachute, Saffola and Revive brands, is on an expansion spree.

Having strengthened its foothold across tier I cities and metros, it is now in the process of establishing its presence in tier II cities and towns. The launch of the skin clinic in Coimbatore is slated for August 1.

Since its inception in December 2002, Kaya has established a network of 34 clinics. It plans to take this to 50 by December 2006. Among other places, it has confirmed its plans to open the clinic at Thiruvananthapuram and Kochi very soon.

Speaking to Business Line, Dr Ramaiyer, a consulting dermatologist at Kaya, said that the company's in-house survey showed that the share of spend on skin care in tier II towns such as Coimbatore and other IT hubs was relatively high.

"Young people employed in IT companies are more conscious of their appearance. Skin care treatment is an affordable spend for these youngsters," he said. "Kaya is not a beauty parlour but a clinic that offers cosmetic dermatology in the ambience of a spa. We are in the non-invasive space."

The advanced skincare services use US Food and Drug Administration (USDA) approved, best-in-class technology most suited for Indian skin.

The services include laser hair removal, skin polishing and brightening, acne and acne scar reduction, micro-current facial toning, deep wrinkle removal, and fillers.

To a query on investment, he said that Kaya was a 100 per cent subsidiary of Marico Industries.

"We are fully funded by Marico. The investment cost on each clinic has been close to Rs 1.25 crore. A major chunk of this amount is on sourcing technology. We do incur cost on interiors."

According to him, at least a dozen clinics have broken even in the last two years.
