General Insurance National Insurance to offer accident cover for Kerala workers Our Bureau
Thiruvananthapuram , July 25 NATIONAL Insurance Company has identified Kerala as a potential market for its Workers' (Accident) Welfare Policy. Persons engaged in manual labour in factories and those working as drivers, salespersons, mechanics, machine operators, carpenters, construction workers and those working in occupations of similar hazards are eligible for purposes of this scheme. Those working in offices, hospitals, hotels and even commercial establishments also can subscribe to the policy. According to Mr M.P. Ramkumar, Senior Divisional Manager, National Insurance Company, the policy will come in handy for even the common man on the street who runs the risk of getting himself injured in a wayside brawl or even civilian unrest involving riots, lathi-charge and similar eventualities. Another potential segment is the newspaper hawkers who ply in the early morning hours in pursuit of their business but possibly risk bodily injuries in accidents or otherwise. The per capita sum insured can be Rs 1 lakh (annual premium Rs 210), Rs 2 lakh (Rs 300) or Rs 3 lakh (Rs 390) depending on the earnings of the workman. Service tax will be payable extra. Contingencies covered include death due to accident and permanent total disablement due to accident. The unique feature about the product is it pays higher benefits in case of disability. Accordingly, death of the policyholder will entitle his next of kin to 100 per cent of the sum assured. But permanent total disablement will earn him 150 per cent of the sum insured. It will be reduced to 75 per cent depending on the type of injury sustained. In case an accidental injury requires hospitalisation for the insured workman, the treatment expenses reasonably and necessarily incurred is reimbursed. Medical expenses payable include hospitalisation/domiciliary hospitalisation of up to Rs 1 lakh; ambulance charges ranging from Rs 2,500-Rs 10,000 and even outpatient treatment. The premium rates will be loaded further for persons working in heavy risk occupations. The Division is talking to authorities in the Government and various institutions on ways to bringing the employees across the board under cover, Mr Ramkumar said.
