Bengal garment makers' concern over apparel park

Kolkata. July 24
THE West Bengal Garment Manufacturers and Dealers Association (WBGMDA) has expressed its reservation on the recent initiative of the West Bengal Government to set up an apparel park at Uluberia in Howrah district.
The association felt that with the garment wholesale market being located in the twin cities of Kolkata and Howrah, it would be a difficult proposition for the industry to shift its base to Uluberia.
Addressing the inaugural session of the 30th buyer-seller meet here on Saturday, Mr Kunj Behari Kabra, President of the association, urged the State Government to set up the proposed park on the eastern fringes of the city.
Responding to the industry's concern , the State Minister for Cottage and Small-Scale Industries, Mr Bansogopal Chowdhury, told the meeting: "We had tried to identify land near the eastern metropolitan bypass for almost one-and-a-half years. However, as it proved to be a futile effort we decided to move to Uluberia."
