Dairy & Dairy Products Integrated fodder programme launched in Karnataka Our Bureau
Mangalore , July 24 THE Dakshina Kannada Milk Producers' Union and the Sri Kshetra Dharmasthala Rural Development Project (SKDRDP) have launched an `integrated fodder development programme', which is aimed at bringing down the cost of production of milk in Dakshina Kannada district. Launching the programme at Dharmasthala in Dakshina Kannada district, the President of the union, Mr B. Niranjan, said that the district produces 1.80 lakh litres of milk every day. The union purchases milk from farmers at Rs 10.25 a litre. Farmers in the district do not find animal husbandry as a profitable venture as they have to bring fodder from other districts. He said that the district purchases around 3,500 tonnes of fodder from other districts. The integrated fodder development programme has been launched to tide over this problem. The programme will help in bringing down the cost of production of milk in the district, he said. The milk producers union will bear 25 per cent of the total cost of fodder seeds and fodder stalks. Stating that nearly 10,000 farmers in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts will be covered under the programme, he said 20 farmers in every village would be encouraged to take up fodder cultivation on their land.
