TRAI plans unified licensing regime

New Delhi , July15

THE Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has made a case for introducing a unified licensing regime in the country, as this will help in unification of networks and services leading to advanced and cheaper telecom services to customers.

In a consultation paper on `Next Generation Telecom Networks,' the regulator said, just as access problems were sorted out through a unified access service licence, a unified regime is essential for convergence of technologies.

"The question is whether we should change the regulation and licensing regime in a manner that the operators are free to choose the best and the cheapest networks and technologies," it said.

A unified licence can easily deal with the converging technologies, carriage, service and platform.

Though transition will be difficult, this will hugely benefit the rural economy, which has a large demand for telephony, broadband, TV and other services, if they can be delivered.

The unified licence will give an opportunity to service providers to innovate towards the best solution.
