Foods & Food Processing Variety - Lifestyle India consumed Rs 41,000-cr junk food in 2003 Sudhanshu Ranade
Chennai , July 12 THE total value of junk food consumed in India in 2003 was about Rs 41,000 crore; of which, rural areas accounted for a little over Rs 22,000 crore. Roughly one could say that the market was split about equally between rural and urban areas, despite the rural population outnumbering the urban by a ratio of about 3 to 1. According to NSS (National Sample Survey) data for the category `beverages, refreshments and processed foods', the money spent on junk food was almost 25 per cent higher than the Rs 33,000-crore spent on edible oils. The top 8 per cent of the rural population spent about Rs 6,000 crore. The total for the top 60 per cent was Rs 18,000 crore, i.e., a little over 80 per cent of the total rural spend on junk food. In urban areas, junk food consumption was more closely concentrated in the upper income brackets. While there was not much difference in the total value of junk food consumed by the top 8 per cent of the population (in fact, thanks to the smaller number of people in this bracket in urban areas, it was a bit lower, at Rs 5,300 crore), 80 per cent of urban junk food consumption was accounted for by the top 50 per cent of the urban population. In terms of per capita spending, the top 60 per cent of the rural population consumed Rs 403 in 2003, against a per capita spend of Rs 1,140 for the top half of the urban population.
