Events `Good governance key to economic development' Our Bureau
Thiruvananthapuram , July 7 GOOD governance contributes to sustainable economic development and growth, said Ms Jenny Shipley, former Prime Minister of New Zealand. Speaking at a workshop on `governance of public service providers and state-owned enterprises' held in the city, she pointed out that good governance enhances democracy. Ms Shipley however emphasised that good governance is not an end in itself, but is part of a toolbox.
The workshop, which is part of an endeavour to introduce public service organisations in Kerala to global governance practices, is being organised by the Kerala Planning Board, Public Sector Restructuring and Internal Audit Board, Centre for Management Development and the Commonwealth Association for Corporate Governance. The Kerala Industries Minister, Mr V.K. Ibrahim Kunju, inaugurated the workshop, which is supported by the Commonwealth Secretariat and the Modernising Government Programme-Kerala. In a presentation on `public service and policy instruments for its governance', Mr Michael Gillibrand, former advisor to the Commonwealth Secretariat said that governance is about doing the right thing. Without good governance, development and economic growth cannot be achieved. Earlier, in a special address to the gathering, the former Chairman of the State Planning Board, Mr V. Ramachandran, pointed out that lack of public spiritedness is at the root of all issues related to governance of public service providers and affect the efficiency of government. Others who addressed the workshop included Mr Geoffrey Bowes, Chief Executive, Commonwealth Association for Corporate Governance; Dr Y.R.K. Reddy, Chairman, Yaga Consulting Pvt Ltd, and Mr Srinivas Sampath of the Commonwealth Secretariat.
