Technology Israel, AP moot panel for farm tech transfer Our Bureau
Hyderabad , July 7 ISRAEL and Andhra Pradesh have proposed to constitute a joint committee to help transfer of modern farm practices to benefit farmers in the State. The proposal came up during a meeting of the Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, currently in Tel Aviv, with the Israeli Minister for Agriculture & Rural Development, Mr Yisrael Katz. Both agreed to the move and decided that the nitty-gritty would be worked out soon. As per a suggestion made by the Israeli Minister, the Committee will comprise six members, three from each side. It will have officials and agricultural experts. The idea is to bring relevant Israeli technologies that would help farmers suffering from a series of drought, low productivity etc. For example, the adoption of latest technologies in Israel were yielding 40,000 quintals of tomato per hectare compared to a meagre 40 quintals in AP districts, according to an official release here today. Post-harvest technologies was another area of discussions. While AP produces around 10 million tonnes of fruits and vegetables annually, only 5 per cent is processed for export due to lack of relevant technologies. Here AP could adopt Israel model. Dr Reddy, who also visited some farms in Jerusalem, enquired about the economic feasibility of the crop, productivity, number of persons working per acre, support price etc. He asked the high level delegation accompanying him, which included the Agriculture Minister, Mr N. Raghuveera Reddy, to study two aspects of enhancing productivity and complementing it by improving processing technologies, so that it could be applied back home in AP. The Chief Minister also had a separate meeting with the Israeli Environment Minister, Mr Shalom Simhon, and discussed various issues related to Green House emissions, treatment of industrial wastes etc, the release added.
