Power Kanara Chamber seeks early implementation of thermal power plant Our Bureau
Mangalore , July 7 THE Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) has sought the early implementation of thermal power plant, promoted by Nagarjuna Power Corporation Ltd, at Padubidri in Udupi district. Implementation of the project will help in meeting the energy requirements of the State, which is slated for massive growth in agriculture, industry and services, it said. In a letter to the Principal Secretary of Ecology, Environment and Forest the Chamber said that the delay in the implementation of the project would deny the benefits of employment and production in all areas. Referring to the issue of `carrying capacity of the district', which has been raised by a section of society, the letter said that it creates an unnecessary fear and apprehension in the minds of citizens. It said that the High Court has made it clear that `carrying capacity' has no legal definition or basis. The Chamber requested the Principal Secretary to convey this to the district authorities in Udupi and Dakshina Kannada. It said that citizens should be given an assurance that implementation of State, national and international standards on environment management; adherence to conditions of licences and permissions issued; and State monitoring of environmental concerns will be thorough and efficient. This should convince the citizens that the project is working within the ambit of law, rules and procedures laid down for public safety, the letter added.
