Bangalore , July 5

IBM says it has "aggressive plans to capture the UNIX market" with its flagship product, Power 5-based servers.

According to Mr Alok Ohrie, Country manager, STG, IBM India, the Power5's lead in performance compared with the competition, as well as the scalability of a DB2 cersion that is optimised for SAP applications make this system an unbeatable platform for SAP customers.

In 2004, the IBM's Power5 had a 27 per cent share in the RISC Unix market in India and "we plan to be the leader in the market soon", said Mr Ohrie. UNIX is a $21-billion market worldwide, he said, quoting IDC figures.

"We will not only grow existing accounts but also breaking into competitive accounts and our recent success at Titan industries is an example of our focus," Mr Jyothi Satyanathan, Country Manager, pSeries and OpenPower said. The company is targeting the telecom, utilities, government segments and is also focussed on the SMB market and educational institutions, Mr Ohrie said.
