New Delhi , July 5

RANBAXY Laboratories Ltd has entered into an in-licensing agreement with JB Chemicals & Pharmaceuticals Ltd (JBCPL), India to market the latter's herbal brand, Doktor Mom, in the Romanian market.

The Doktor Mom range includes syrup, lozenges and cold and cough rub. While Ranbaxy will market these products in Romania, JBCPL will continue to manufacture them and will also provide promotional input for the brand.

In a company statement, Mr Malvinder Mohan Singh, President, Pharmaceuticals, Ranbaxy, said, "We welcome the opportunity to join hands with JBCPL to leverage each other's capabilities. The agreement reinforces our strategy to utilise licensing opportunities to further our growth in the overseas markets."

Doktor Mom is a popular brand in the cough and cold relief segment in Russia, Ukraine and CIS countries. This is the first time JBCPL has out-licensed this brand.

"We are excited about this partnership with a strong marketing company like Ranbaxy to help take Doktor Mom to new markets. Ranbaxy has demonstrated its skill in effectively marketing pharmaceutical products in Romania through its strong sales force. This gives us an entry into the European markets with our biggest brand," said Mr J.B. Mody, Chairman, JBCPL.

Romania is a growing market for Ranbaxy in Europe with sales of $6.4 million in 2004, achieving a growth of 127 per cent. Some of the key Ranbaxy brands in this market include Zanocin (Ofloxacin, an antibiotic), Simvor (Simvastatin for lowering cholesterol), and Serlift (Sertraline, an anti-depressant).
