Society & Development Industry & Economy - Water Ion Exchange sets up desalination plant in Nagapattinam Our Bureau
Mumbai , July 3 RESPONDING to the critical need for safe drinking water in tsunami affected areas, Ion Exchange India Ltd (IEL) has taken the initiative in supplying a containerised seawater desalination plant to the Tamil Nadu Government and installing it in Nagapattinam. The 1000-litre/hour membrane-based plant provides free drinking water to the rehabilitation camps in Nagapattinam, according to company release. "The total cost of the plant is about Rs 50 lakh. The unit is now in operation and we are distributing free drinking water to the local people," Mr C.K. Sandeep, General Manager (southern operation), IEL told Business Line. The plant is the contribution of the company and its employees with component supplier, Pentair pitching in with membrane pressure tubes. "The company representatives are also training the local people in the operations and maintenance of the plant," he said. The mobile disaster management plant incorporates treatment systems, which enable purification of contaminated water from any source - ground water to seawater to produce safe drinking water. Compact and skid mounted, the plant is easily and quickly transportable by truck, and is therefore ideally suited to provide drinking water in the affected areas during disasters such as droughts, cyclones, floods and earthquakes. Earlier Ion Exchange had shipped 50 point-of-use Zero B Puriline drinking water purification units to Sri Lanka. Currently, the company is executing an order from the Central Government for 7,500 Zero B Srijal water purifiers for the tsunami relief operations in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands.
