Fuel price hike

The petrol and diesel price hike has become a burning issue.

According to an oil marketing company in Tamil Nadu, out of Rs 44.26 paid for every litre of petrol, Rs 14.80 goes to the Centre and Rs 10 to the State. Similarly, for every Rs 31.51 per litre of diesel, the Centre gets Rs 5 and the State, Rs 6.20.

By merely reducing the Tamil Nadu sales tax on both fuels by 3 per cent, the petrol and diesel prices can be reduced by Re 1 and 75 paise respectively.

The State government should bring this into effect immediately and advise the Centre to carry out a matching reduction.

The move would be appreciated by the middle-class, who constitute the largest population of petrol and diesel users.
