Cashew Karnataka earmarks Rs 2 cr to promote cashew cultivation Our Bureau
Mangalore , June 27 THE Karnataka Horticulture Minister, Mr A. Srinivas, has said that the State has earmarked Rs 2 crore for promotion of cashew cultivation under the National Horticulture Mission. Of this, Rs 1 crore will be utilised in 2005-06. Addressing newspersons here on Monday, the Minister said that the Government wants to promote cashew cultivation in a big way. The Government's aim is to increase production to 1.5 lakh tonnes in the next 10 years. To achieve this goal, the Government has decided to distribute 2.6 lakh cashew saplings to farmers free of cost. Highlighting the role of the cashew industry in achieving this goal, he said the Karnataka Cashew Manufacturers' Association has come forward to distribute 50,000 saplings to growers in the State. Stating that the Government has several plans to increase cashew production, the Minister said cultivation would be taken up in non-traditional areas such as Kolar, Gulbarga, Bidar and Belgaum. There is a demand for about 60 lakh cashew saplings in the State. Of this, nearly two lakh saplings will be produced in Dakshina Kannada district. He said that a note has been sent to the Government to transfer the Karnataka Cashew Development Corporation from Forest Department to Horticulture Department. The transfer may help increase cashew production in the State, he said. The present yield of cashew in the State is five quintals a hectare, and the Government wants to increase it to 15 quintals a hectare. New methods of cashew cultivation will be adopted to achieve this goal, he said. The Minister said that the Government is ready to extend subsidy to private entrepreneurs, if they are ready to set up cashew drink manufacturing units. Cashew apple can be used for preparing drinks such as feni.
