Kolkata , June 15

AFTER expanding in Mumbai and Punjab, the Delhi-based Mother Dairy India Ltd has entered the eastern region. The company will further expand its reach to South India during this fiscal.

Addressing a press conference in connection with the launch of its ice-creams in Kolkata here today, the Chief Executive Officer, Mr Paul Thachil, said the company would market its products in Goa, Bangalore and Hyderabad this fiscal.

In Maharashtra, Mother Dairy ice-creams are now available in Mumbai only. The company will expand its reach in the rest of the State.

To cater to the expanded market, the company is currently negotiating opportunities for outsourcing ice-cream products in Kolkata and Mumbai. The outsourcing, if through, however, will be limited to "less complicated products". The bulk of the products will be supplied from the company's Delhi facility.

The company is focusing on an all-India spread in its milk products, including butter, long-life milk, whitener, paneer and dahi during next few years. Though having started marketing of liquid milk in Mumbai and Hyderabad during this year, Mr Thachil does not foresee any further expansion in the near future.

In tune with the roadmap for product launches in new markets, the company had escalated its ad spend by 20 per cent to nearly Rs 40 crore during this fiscal. The turnover is expected to touch the Rs 2,000-crore mark. The export turnover, which includes overseas sales of skimmed milk, fruit juices and fruit pulp are set to witness a jump from Rs 45 crore to Rs 75 crore.

On the Kolkata market, Mr Thachil said the city was the largest market for dairy whitener products, third largest in butter and the largest for ice-creams in the eastern region. Accordingly, Kolkata is expected to contribute over 10 per cent of Mother Dairy Ltd's total turnover in the next few years.

Interestingly, Kolkata already has a Mother Dairy unit that was run by National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) till 1996 before being handed over to the State milk marketing federation.

According to Mr Thachil, Mother Dairy India Ltd has entered into an arrangement with Mother Dairy Kolkata under which the latter will hold exclusive right of milk marketing in the city. In return, Mother Dairy Delhi will market milk products in the State.
